James had a twin sister, Lucy Ann. According to a widow's pension document, James was Blond, about 5' 10" tall, light hair, rather robust, weight about 160 pounds.

In her later years, Sarah became totally deaf and would sit by the fire reading her bible and rocking the babies of the family.
